Palladium Gallium Intermetallic Compounds for the Selective Hydrogenation of Acetylene Part I: Preparation and Structural Investigation Under Reaction Conditions

چکیده
15 August 2008 Abstract The intermetallic compounds PdGa and Pd3Ga7 are introduced as selective catalysts for the hydrogenation of acetylene. Single phase PdGa and Pd3Ga7 can readily be prepared by the appropriate thermal treatment of the stoichiometric mixtures of the corresponding elements. The initial low surface areas of the as-prepared materials can be increased by careful mechanical treatment without decomposition. Detailed investigations of PdGa and Pd3Ga7 by DSC/TG, in situ powder X-ray diffraction and in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy during thermal treatment under various inert or reactive gas atmospheres showed a high thermal stability. The long-range and short-range order in the crystal structures remained intact up to temperatures of about 600 K. Neither phase transitions nor decomposition were detectable. In addition to high thermal stability – preserving the active-site isolation under reaction conditions – no incorporation of hydrogen or carbon in the intermetallic compounds under reducing conditions was observed. Besides being interesting model systems, palladium gallium intermetallic compounds are promising candidates for the application as highly selective hydrogenation catalysts.

متن کاملIntermetallic Compound AlPd As a Selective Hydrogenation Catalyst: A DFT Study
Recently, it has been demonstrated that intermetallic compounds composed of Pd and Ga or Co and Al provide excellent selectivity for the hydrogenation of acetylene to ethylene. Motivated by experimental works on GaPd catalysts, we have performed a detailed ab initio study of acetylene hydrogenation by the pseudo 5-fold (120) surface of the isostructural and isoelectronic AlPd compound crystalli...
متن کاملThe reaction mechanism and selectivity of acetylene hydrogenation over Ni-Ga intermetallic compound catalysts: a density functional theory study.
Intermetallic compounds (IMCs) have shown excellent catalytic performance toward the selective hydrogenation of acetylene, but the theoretical understanding on this reaction over Ni-based IMCs is rather limited. In this work, the adsorptions of the C2 species, Bader charge, projected density of states (PDOS) and the reaction pathways were calculated by the density functional theory (DFT) method...
متن کاملImproved selectivity by stabilizing and exposing active phases on supported Pd nanoparticles in acetylene-selective hydrogenation.
Palladium dynamics: Under hydrogenation conditions, saturating over-active palladium by carbon diffusion leads to a stable and selective particle surface. By choosing supports with suitable geometric structures and establishing a strong interaction between supports and metal particles, accumulated species can be regularly rearranged and reaction-selective phases can be exposed (see figure).
متن کاملAl13Fe4 as a low-cost alternative for palladium in heterogeneous hydrogenation.
Replacing noble metals in heterogeneous catalysts by low-cost substitutes has driven scientific and industrial research for more than 100 years. Cheap and ubiquitous iron is especially desirable, because it does not bear potential health risks like, for example, nickel. To purify the ethylene feed for the production of polyethylene, the semi-hydrogenation of acetylene is applied (80 × 10(6) ton...
